About The Fox

Situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Fox and Hounds Inn is one of the oldest buildings in West Witton, brimming with history, and with a friendly, welcoming vibe. Our outside beer garden and covered terrace are perfect for al-fresco drinking, whilst in winter we can offer cask ales by a cosy fireside.

‘The Fox’ as it is known locally, is a friendly and welcoming traditional local pub and restaurant, with cask conditioned ales and a superb wine list. The iconic Penhill beacon is within walking distance, with trails to explore in all directions, including hiking paths to Carlton, Middleham, Asgarth Falls, and West Burton Falls. Dogs and children are most welcome.

Beers

Great beer is our passion! We’ve always got Theakston’s Best, Black Sheep Bitter on draught, plus selections from our two local brewers – Yorkshire Dales Brewery and Wensleydale Brewery. We also cater for lager drinkers with options such as Bierra Moretti and Amstel.

Wines

Our wine list has been hand-picked by our regulars. Our fantastic selection of White Wine currently features New Zealand and Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, Italian Pinot Grigio, Australian Chardonnay, Spanish Rioja or Mariposa Blanco, French Chablis and German Riesling. Our selection of delicious reds includes Argentinian Malbec, Chilean Merlot, Australian Shiraz, South African Pinotage and French Bordeaux.

Our food is home prepared and cooked to order by our team. The Team has a passion for creating traditional pub classics with a modern twist. We aim to source as much fresh produce and meat as we can locally and our Menu changes regularly.

Our Menu always includes Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten Free options. On Sundays we offer traditional roast dinner – usually beef or pork – with all the trimmings.

Events

The Fox is at the heart of West Witton life. A traditional local, it’s very much a community centre for the village. The pub has active teams for darts, dominoes and quoits so if you’re lucky you’ll have a chance to see these traditional games being played with a passion!

We have a regular Charity Pub Quiz every other week on Friday evenings (see our social media feed for upcoming dates).

We have a lovely snug that can seat up to twenty people, which you are welcome to book for your own events or for Private Dining.

Enter DL8 4LP in your sat-nav as the postcode. The Fox pub is on the A684 approximately 4 miles West of Leyburn in the center of the village of West Witton in the Yorkshire Dales. There is a large car park to the rear, the entrance to which is directly alongside the pub; it’s a tight turn so take it slow and watch for cars leaving. If you approach the village from the South, please note that sat-navs may direct you down ‘Grassgill‘. Although a very pretty approach, it’s a narrow road with several hairpin bends on 1:4 hills and is effectively unpassable for caravans and large motorhomes or vans.

In the winter it’s often icy and dangerous for the unwary, even in a 4×4, and can be completely impassable so an alternative route is recommended. The A684 is kept clear even in quite bad snow conditions so is the best approach at most times of year. If you give us a ring before you come we’ll be able to tell you what the road conditions are like.

Our rooms

Comfortable and stylish, our newly renovated bedrooms offer everything you need for the perfect rural retreat or romantic getaway.

Our rooms are individually decorated, with ensuite bathrooms, tea and coffee-making facilities, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast is available at an extra cost of £12 per person or £6 per child and served in our pub restaurant, where you are also able to find delicious homecooked meals and award-winning beer.

Situated at the back of the building with views over Penhill, this bright and airy room has reclaimed furnishings, including a king size sleigh bed. The ensuite bathroom has an over-sized bath and rain shower.

The Blue Room offers spacious accommodation with a comfortable king-sized bed with ensuite bathroom and walk-in shower.

Swallows Rest

A self-contained apartment in a converted stable, Swallow Rest offers you a home from home if you are looking for a self-catered staycation. Downstairs, the apartment comprises an open-plan kitchen with electric oven and fridge-freezer, cosy lounge with slate fireplace and log burner. Upstairs you’ll find a spacious double bedroom with cottage style bed, and bathroom with an over-bath shower. An outside patio is available for residents’ use.

Low Barn Lodge

A cosy twin-bedded room with ensuite shower room in a converted barn, Low Barn Lodge is a great place for people who need a comfortable no-frills room for a short stay.

Dog policy

Dogs may stay in our rooms by agreement in advance for £15 per night. We are not able to offer dog beds or bowls so please make sure you bring your own equipment.
